Riding for the disabled in South Africa - Part 3
Today SARDA is a registered fund-raising organisation with
teaching branches in major centres throughout the country. It
is an Associated Member Group of the Riding for the Disabled
Association (RDA) in the United Kingdom, and is affiliated to the
Riding for the Disabled International (RDI) organisation.
Whilst fun and recreation are important components of the lessons
at SARDA, SARDA qualified instructors work in co-operation with
voluntary helpers, physiotherapists, doctors and remedial teachers
to ensure that pupils derive the maximum benefit from their
lessons. Lessons are not just about riding, but
incorporate specific exercises, social skills and other vital
educational skills such as language, communication, concentration
and independence - all aiming to develop the mental as well as the
physical abilities of the disabled. Pupils are also encouraged
to take the SARDA Proficiency Tests; these cover riding skills, and
a basic knowledge and understanding of horsemanship.
- All SARDA Instructors and helpers are volunteers.
- No pupil is charged for lessons although donations towards
lessons are always gratefully received.
