Becoming a SARDA Instructor:

SA Riding for the Disabled offers two levels of instructor qualification; the Level 1 Branch Instructor and the Level 2 Senior Instructor.

The Level 1 certificate qualifies instructors to work at an established branch of which there are presently 5 throughout the country;Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, Pietermaritzburg and Port Elizabeth.  The Level 2 exams can be taken a minimum of 2 years after qualification as a Level 1 instructor and qualifies instructors to run their own branch of SA Riding for the Disabled.

The first step in training to be an SA Riding for the Disabled instructor is to successfully complete SANEF modules 1 to 3; these are non riding modules with the emphasis on stable and equine management.

Once these modules have been completed prospective candidates apply to the instructor training program and, on acceptance, are assigned a mentor and start their volunteer hours.

Prior to taking the exams all candidates must have completed at least 25 volunteer and 25 teaching hours.  The Level 1 certificate is made up of 7 exams which may be taken in modules over a 2 year period.  The exams are 3 written papers (physical disabilities, mental disabilities and autism), a practical horse assessment exam where the candidate is expected to ride to assess the horses, a group able bodied teaching lesson, a group disabled teaching lesson and an individual disabled lesson.

Presently we can only offer training on week days during school terms at 3 branches; Cape Town, Durban and Highveld.  We are however in the process of planning weekend courses at some of the branches to allow candidates that work full time the opportunity to gain the experience and hours that they need to prepare for the Level 1 exam - please contact us on national@sarda.co.za if you would be interested in registering for weekend courses.
