Leading and side helping hints
- before taking your pony
to the mounting block, check all tack and tighten the girth
- riders must only mount with an instructor or physiotherapist
present
- leaders should walk by the pony's shoulder, not in front of it
- never tow the pony along
- side helpers take care of the rider, leaders take care of the
pony
- always face forwards when walking
- be alert at all times, but not tense - be positive
- allow and encourage your rider to do what they can
- in the event of an emergency, stay with your own rider, unless
otherwise requested by your instructor
- if you're unsure about anything, ask your instructor
What else can helpers do?
- always read the notice-board and newsletters for information
and requests for help
- assist with props and costumes for special days (lots of work
goes into preparing riders and ponies,)
- publicise SARDA whenever possible - information booklets are
available and you can direct people to our web site
- pass useful contacts on to the professional staff
- assist with the administration if asked
- help with fund-raising activities
- attend shows and events off-site

So that we can continue to
provide disabled people with the opportunity to ride we need your
help. You can help us by volunteering, or with any
financial assistance that you feel able to give us.
Volunteers
All SARDA groups rely on volunteers - a single
riding session for five disabled children can routinely need ten
volunteer leaders and side-helpers, plus one volunteer instructor.
A mounting team, to assist physically disabled
riders, is made up of three specially trained helpers and
physiotherapists. And, with tack, fields, fences, loose-boxes, feed
bins, water troughs, riding arenas and horse-boxes to maintain,
along with general administration and fund-raising to be organised,
every group welcomes volunteers with a variety of skills.
We look forward to welcoming you as a volunteer at
SARDA!
